Many people think that mountain biking has an off season. That’s great for those that ski or snowboard, but for the rest of us…we love that this high desert living provides us plenty of winter riding opportunities.  And we’re not just talking about the fat biking in the snow type of winter riding.

Here at Rolling H Cycles, much of our crew rides Wilson Creek trail system in the winter as the sandy soil dries out quickly, especially if there is wind the day after rain.  The key is to dress for the cold.  It’s often much colder there than it is at home.

Posted below is Jessica’s winter riding setups. While the pic is from a couple of years ago, not much has changed with Jessica’s winter gear setup.  Jessica has purchased a few bikes since this one, however, the majority of the time you’ll see her on this exact Scott Spark RC, but upgraded with SRAM AXS drivetrain & dropper, and Reynolds carbon wheels.  This bike holds a special place in her heart because it’s been stolen, then recovered, and a few races have been completed on it!  She has some unfinished business with Pierre’s Hole and plans to return and complete both laps.

Jessica’s Winter Riding setup:

ON person:
Thermal chamois tights, DeFeet Woolie Boolie wool socks, Giro shoes, shoe covers, beanie, helmet, thermal base layer, jersey, windproof jacket, packable down coat, Handup Gloves, Serfas bike light, and Garmin Fenix 5.

IN pack:
72 oz H2O DAKINE pack, arm warmers, insulated glove as a backup, hand pump (it’s a tad bulky but has a psi gauge), Co2 x 2, spare tube, Crankbrothers multi tool, tire lever, patch kit, master link, Clif Bar, brownie fig bars, -not pictured, phone.

The bike:  Scott Contessa Spark 900 RC

(Upgrades since this pic: SRAM AXS 1×12 drivetrain, SRAM AXS dropper seatpost, Reynolds carbon wheels, Deity Components grips and pedals.)

Special Mention:
Custom gear bag from Anderson Supply Co. that keeps all of Jessica’s gear together from the house to the trail head.

Tell us in the comments what you wear, pack, and where you ride in the winter.
